MCP (AI agents)

Werk24 runs a hosted Model Context Protocol server. An MCP client (Claude, n8n's AI Agent, or any other client that speaks MCP) connects to it once and can then read drawings on your behalf, with no API code.

Authentication OAuth: you sign in with your Werk24 account. An API token in a header does not authenticate here.
Account A plan and a payment method in the console. Without them every read returns an OnboardingRequiredError with a link to finish setting up the account.

Reads through MCP are charged like any other read.

Tools

Tool What it does
list_ask_types Lists the asks the server offers and what each returns. Reads nothing and costs nothing, so it is the quickest check that the connection works.
read_drawing Reads a drawing with one or more asks: meta_data, features, insights, balloons, redaction, reference_positions, sheet_images, view_images. A sheet image is added to every call.
redact_drawing Returns the drawing with logos, company data, personal data or your own keywords removed.
get_system_status Reports whether the Werk24 platform is up.

Handing it a drawing

The drawing has to reach the server, and how depends on where the client runs:

  • A client with access to your files (Claude Desktop, Claude Code) reads the file and sends its content.
  • A hosted client (claude.ai in a browser, n8n on a server) cannot. Give it a URL instead, and the server fetches the drawing. Use a presigned, time-limited link (S3, GCS or your own storage) that points directly at the file, not at a share or preview page.

Accepted formats are PDF, TIFF, JPEG, PNG and BMP. DWG, DXF, STEP, IGES, STL and SVG are not: export to PDF first. A read usually takes 20 to 60 seconds.

Claude

  1. Settings, then Connectors, then Add custom connector.
  2. Name Werk24, remote MCP server URL https://mcp.w24.co/mcp. Leave the OAuth client fields empty.
  3. Add, then Connect, and sign in with your Werk24 account.

n8n

n8n 1.88 or newer, in a workflow with an AI Agent node:

  1. Under the agent's Tool port, add MCP Client.
  2. Endpoint https://mcp.w24.co/mcp, Server Transport HTTP Streamable, Authentication MCP OAuth2.
  3. In the credential, leave Use Dynamic Client Registration on, put https://mcp.w24.co/mcp in Server URL, click Connect and sign in. Finish the sign-in within five minutes, or n8n's callback expires and the credential fails after a sign-in that worked.

n8n refreshes the token itself afterwards, so a workflow that runs at least monthly does not ask again.

If something does not work

  • Empty tool list: the endpoint must end in /mcp and the transport must be Streamable HTTP, not SSE.
  • CSRF or state error after signing in: the sign-in took longer than five minutes. Connect again.
  • OnboardingRequiredError: the account needs a plan and a payment method in the console.
  • The agent answers without reading the drawing: the server could not fetch the URL. Check that it resolves to the file from outside your network.

Without an agent

MCP is for an agent that decides which asks to call. For a fixed workflow (a drawing arrives, the same asks run, the results go into your ERP or a spreadsheet), a headless run with an API token, or volume, use the HTTP API instead: see Low-code HTTP tools.
